Welcome to
"In The Spotlight"
This is where we will feature different pieces from time to time and this is where you
can get a glimpse of those special offerings.
We are currently featuring "Rhythm & Pulse" by John F. Colson.
About this piece:
There are so many
student musicians these days who have not developed the ability to read music
accurately and independently!
They may have even learned to play the instrument well, but reading music has
eluded them for various reasons.
The point is that more
students should be given the opportunity to become "independent" music
readers. The main objective here is to take an unfamiliar selection and play
it correctly the first time without help from others. What happens in many
scenarios is that the student is placed in an ensemble and instantly becomes
dependent on the other players (or the conductor) to determine the rhythmic
aspect during the rehearsal process.
Rhythm and pulse
are two of the main elements in accurate music reading. There are other factors
involved in the music reading process, but unless these two elements are
implemented precisely, music reading will continue to be a "guessing game" for
the student musician. The "musical" pulse must be felt by the player in order
to be able to subdivide the rhythm correctly as indicated in the music. The
metronome has great value for the student in keeping the pulse steady so as not
to rush or slow down the tempo, and in this regard, should be used by the
student musician in keeping the foot steady and in checking tempos. Tapping the
foot acts as a check and guide on the rhythmic aspect of performance.
This book, with serious
study and practice, should guide the student to becoming an independent reader
and, thereby, contribute to the quality of performance within the instrumental
ensemble. Players should realize that in order to be better readers, they
must devote time and effort to achieving these music reading skills.
